Hi all
I would like to finish a set of skins of P-51B and C of the 354th FG – 9th AF
But I lack some information concerning some planes because non visible on the photos that I possess.
Here they are:
- P-51B-1 43-12393 picture of the Lt. Wah Kau Kong (one of the first aviator of Chinese origin to be pilot in US Air Force), 353rd FS coded FT-F nickname “Chinaman’s Chance” and "No Tickee-No Washee" on the other side.
- Serial number P-51B AJ-I – 356th FS" UNO - WHO" Pilot: Cpt. George 'Max' Lamb.
- Personal Code CG -? P-51B-1 43-12130 - 355th FS "ROBERTA" Pilot: Lt. Edward R. Ryan.
- Personal Code AJ -? P-51B-1 43-12213 - 356th FS" MARY ANNE" Pilot: Lt. Robert Goodnight.

- Nickname ( La Von?... ) of P-51B 43-12428 AJ-E 356th FS, Lt Robert Pop Young belly landing due to flak inducted engine failure on 16 March 1944.
If someone has these information or all information concerning the 354th FG, I am taker.
Meanwhile, I enclose some planes Pack in preview.

Of advance thank you

No luck with the B-model of AJ-I Uno who? , just the D-model seems to be wellknown. As well as with the others , no additional information. Did check all my mustang books (i. e. aviation elite units 354th FG) so far. The 354th FG (though oftenly detached to the 8th AF) was part of the 9th AF, therefore no informations on littlefriends.

Sorry...

I have the same source, Osprey's Aviation Elite 354th Fighter Group book, and can't help you.

A good pic from the "Roberta" :

Dear Mrs Roberta, Hello

That would be with a great pleasure if I can resurrect the plane of your father.
But it miss me the third letter of the calling code, it's the personal letter of the plane of your father.
The first two letters of the code are CG, which belong to the 355th Squadron.
The serial number is the 43-12130, the plane has your first name “ROBERTA” paint on the motor panel side (only on the left side?)
I thinks le nickname is white borded yellow, and this color on the black and white photo does not contradict the usual practice in the 354th FG.
Your father is credited with four aerial victories, as well as many missions of bombardment.
I had already the photograph of your father in his P-51 and that had annoyed me not to have could put this plane in the skinpack of 354th FG.
If you don't know the third letter of the code, we could put a likely letter.
If you have more information about your father's plane, or other aircrafts of this group, I am interested.
I would put the latest results of my research on some planes of 354th FG, as well as inquiries about certain other aircrafts.

About the circumstances of the death of your father.
We be aware that it had to have a lot of courage and nerves of steel to dive at 430 mph for strafe an airfield guarded by the dreaded Flak (anti-aircraft gun), it see you coming, but you don't see it.
About P-51 aircraft model, for 10 enemy aircrafts shot down in dog fight, one P-51 was destroyed.
Only 5.5 enemy aircrafts destroyed on the ground for a P-51 shot down during a airfield attack.
The ratio of loss / victory is clear.
But this probably comes from the fact that the P-51 is not the most suitable aircraft for such missions because of the vulnerability of its cooling system equiped with liquid moving in cooling radiator.
In a ground attack, 29% of P-51s that was hit, were shooting down.
This ratio is only 10% for the P-47 equipped with a radial air-cooled engine.

For those who would know not the circumstances of the death of your father, this link
And, this short video.

Regards

Jorjus

Hi all,

Here, some trials of P-51 Roberta, but lacks the third letter of the code.
I stay tuned !

Also, I just found an old friend on a movie of British Pathé archive about 354th FG.
I mean the P-51B sharkmouthed GQ-T, which during the operation Overlord was coded GQ-H

I carry on Cool

If you happen to have a copy of the book 'Big Friend, Little Friend' by Richard E. Turner it has a list of 356th squadron aircraft in the back (or at least my copy does anyway), with pilot names, fuselage codes, a few serial numbers, and A/C names. I don't know how accurate it is but I'd be happy to type it out for you if you don't have the book.
