Cool video of Hatmann being awarded the diamonds for his 300th kill. Notice how scared he looks. Probably because of the incident where he didn't want to give up his Walther pistol.

Sure. I'll be glad to explain. On August 25th Hartmann travelled to Germany to be awarded his Diamonds to the Knights cross. It was after the July 20 plot to kill Hitler. The night before Dieter Hrabek & crew threw Bubi a wild party and the next day he could hardly stand. He flew his 109 to Insterburg and JG-52 gave him an escort. When he arrived the world had changed. Hitler had begun the assassination trials and everyone was under suspicion. There were three areas of security you had to get through and no ne was allowed to carry a weapon past the third. He told hitlers ss guard that if he was not allowed to carry his walther pistol he would not receive the award from the Fuhrer. The guard went to talk with Von Below and Below told him it was alright. Afterward Hitler went to Hartmann and awarded him the decoration. Hope this helps.
