at least two of the P-40 shots on the previous page are Merlin powered F models, or possibly the L model in Tunisia (they flew both there). The ones in formation are the long fuselage version, as they shifted to the long fuselage in the middle of production of the F. The lack of a scoop over the engine is the indicator of such. The L is the 4 gun version, to save weight adn get more performance. The Merlin didn't have the same effect on the P-40 that it did on the 51, though it did have better performance at altitude. The ones under the palm trees look like they are short fuselage K models, with the filet at the base of the verticle stabilizer.

Did ya notice the natural metal scheme on one? Taht was probably an M or N. Those old short scoop Tomahawks are pretty fascinating to. I hope the car owners that got wiped out by the Hellcat had insurance.

I did some research for some P-40 skins I made so I'd like to add to Enforcer57's post if I may:
- the P-40 in Tunisia is an L model (it has the extra bracing around the windscreen that the F lacked),
- the ones in formation are F models of the 44 FS/18 FG and/or 68 FS/347 FG in the Solomons (they often flew together with mixed formations),
- the P-40 that overshot is an M of the 44 FS,
- the baremetal P-40 isn't actually bare. The 45 FS painted their P-40Ns a special scheme when they moved from Hawaii to front line operations. The upper surfaces are painted a light tan colour (that proably went a bit pink with weathering) that was meant to blend in with the coral sand of the islands they operated from, while the lower surfaces were a very pale blue. In black and white photos it can be very hard to spot the difference between the two colours as they are of a very similar tone.
