First post here. Ive been playing IL2 for a while now, so far i love it. its my first real flightsim and i cant get enough of it.

I downloaded the Ultrapack 3, which added a whole batch of new planes and cockpit graphics. The problem is, the ground and water still looks awful. Ive tried going into the config file and changing it to Water=4 or Water=3 like i was instructed, but that does nothing! it still looks like im staring down at a giant blueberry! please help.

Im running this on an ASUS G53JW with an Nvidia GTX460M, Windows 7 64 Bit. Im using Open GL rendering as well.

Another problem is with the resolution, ive tried going into the config pack and changing the resolution to 1900X1080 (my native resolution) but the minute i change the numbers in the Width Height thing, the game doesnt start! the UP3 launcher opens up, i click "play IL2 now!' it loads for about 2 seconds, then drops back to the launcher! wtf?

Are you sure your native res is not 1920x1080 or 1900x1200?

sounds like you are not in "perfect" mode also, search for confi settings to get perfect mode active, then water=4 and much better ground will be available

If you have IL-2 installed in "program files" win7 will not allow changes to conf.ini file to stick

Cheers Dakpilot

As well ensure you activate HardwareShaders, found in the [Render_OpenGL] section of the Config.ini file

HardwareShaders=1 (not 0)

As well check this FAQ right here at M4T

Render_OpenGL explained

Hope this helps.

thanks!

its great to have a game that looks easily as good as Cliffs of Dover without dealing with the horrible bugs, lack of content (thanks Ubisoft) that goes along with it.

Still havent found out how to solve the resolution thing though Sad

Have you tried widescreen? Check out this link, once again right here at M4T

IL2 in Wide Screen
Thanks to MaXMhZ for the post

A little Config.ini editing and you should be able to run Il2 in 1920 x 1080 or what ever resolution your monitor/video card will support.

turns out copying and pasting it did the trick! thanks again.

Also, you can edit the config if you have the game in program files, you just have to drag the file somewhere else, edit it, save it, then drag it back into the folder

Its a matter of personal taste I know but I find the ultra glossy water, as per your screenie, out of scale. The apparent reflective value of water changes with altitude, at low level it looks very wet and shiny but from normal operational altitudes it more often than not looks almost matt. It resumes its shine seen from high altitude but at these hights individual waves are invisble. The in-game moddeling of the sea seems more realistic to me when in the original settings, but I know many people like "high gloss."

This is true, it depends on how you fly i guess. I usually fly the IL2 or the F4U and do low level ground/sea attacks, so I want the water to look nice when i fly close to it.
