Processor speed question
Tech Issues main forum, there are several sister and sub forums in this category that are designed for specific issues, please check forum titles before posting.

  1. Please start a new topic if you have a problem.
  2. Do NOT reply to a thread with an unrelated issue.
It makes NO sense to bury your problem on page 5 of a thread not even related to your problem. Chances are high it will be ignored, and it will contribute to a chaotic forum where no one can find anything.
  3. Start a new topic with a meaningful title. "HELP!!!!" will not do...
  4. Please see here to learn how to help us help you, see also FAQ and the M4T Knowledge Base

Hi, I figured since there are some knowledgeable people around here I'd ask...

I was looking at the speed of my processor (Intel Pentium E5200) and it should be at 2.50GHz however both cores only reach 1,79GHz. I vaguely recall someone mentioning how on my system 1.80GHz would be the max, I can't quite remember if he said that could be improved. Confused

Specs:
Win XP 32bit (SP3)
Intel Pentium E5200
2.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz
Gigabyte G31M-S2L
NVIDIA GeForce 210

So why is this so and can the processor reach it's potential?
Thanks Cool

You need to configure these settings in the BIOS.

Get the pdf motherboard manual from the mfg site and read the BIOS section.

You might need DDR2-800 RAM to get the CPU running stable at 2.5GHz (200 MHz x 12.5 multiplier at FSB 800).

Thanks again, I do remember the man saying something about memory so I guess that's what it was.

I've got it running at 2GHz and nothing seems to have gone wrong so I guess it's working

Oh and I won't be getting any RAM as I've been stockpiling parts for a new Win 7 system.

I would not invest money in an old system like this either.

A possible option would be a new MB+CPU+RAM. It all depends on the condition of the components you could move to a new system.

I plan on getting a whole new everything. Except for the hard drive which is only four months old or so.

At the moment hard drive prices are soaring due to the floods in Asia.
Your hard drive price probably has increased by 50%

By the way, what ram (amount, type etc) would you recommend?
Thanks.

I would not invest more money in the old system.
DDR2 RAM is quite expensive already (less demand, higher price - twice what DDR3 costs now).

For the new system 8GB DDR3 if you are going to run Seven , or Vista x64 versions,, 4 GB if you are going to run XP 32 bit or Win8. The type would depend on the CPU.

Yes, I did mean for the new system. Well I'll get the 8GB, since I'm going withe 7. Quite cheap, less than a copy of Il-2 Cliffs of Dover.

Keep in mind only the fastest/overclocked CPUs will take advantage of RAM faster than DDR3-1333. Only the x64 OS versions (64 bit) will be able to address more than 4 GB. Cliffs of Dover is happy with 8GB, and that demand might drop with coming patches/updates.

Thanks again.
I figured I do things properly and get 64 bit Win 7 and all that, rather than something half hearted. Not too worried about backwards compatibility since I've got a few brand new sims/games I can't play properly at the moment.

Keep an eye on Tom's Hardware for information. They have pretty good charts for just about every component, news and reviews too.

www.tomshardware.com/c...ors,6.html for processors e.g.
