Hi all,

thought i post some screens of what i am working on at the moment,
Me323 gigants which served at the eastern front (Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Rumania and Hungary) in 1943/1944, some until the end of ETO war.
Again research is taking much more time than the skinning work but therefore it will become a large skinpack finally.

Being never completely satisfied i reworked the template x-times so far.
The already finished skins are from 5.,6. 7. and 8.Staffel TG5. More of Stab, 1., 2., 3.TG5, ETG5 and IV.TG4 to come.
Critics and comments are appreciated - tell me what you think.

Absolutely superb Armin, this beast has been waiting for Skins of this Quality for years. I can't comment on the accuracy of the schemes but I'm sure your research is impeccable. I can comment on your artistry and these are beautifuly rendered skins with just the right amount of weathering for these hard working heavy-lifters.

Thanks again for taking the time and effort to skin these work-a-day planes rather than the more glamerous fighters. My IAR 80 is on the runway warming up its engine!

It's always great to have a large pack of well researched skins, especially for some of the neglected planes. You're work looks terrific, can't wait.

fantastic work on these skins, and considering that you are using a fighter sized canvas for such a massive bird... it makes the level of detail you've squeezed in there all the more impressive.

I agree, the amount of detail (especially on the wings) is awesome. The weathering is top notch as well

Thank you very much gents for your kind comments, it is always a pleasure getting feedback for the work Very Happy .
The wellmade nonpublic template i especially got from foobar was an excellent base to start from, some layers are from sparty.

@wingco
Regarding accurateness i had to decide which variant to prefer. The stock game 3Dmodel is a E-2 variant, in fact a lot of the gigants were D-1, D-2,
D-6 and E-1 variants.

The differences were made up by other engine manufacturers, two or threebladed props, different armament.
The E-2 is the only variant which had the two upper wing gun turrets. It therefore was a better defended variant than the other types.
I finally decided to skin them all close to the E-2 variant.

Nice work indeed! Excellent quality. Just remember that these a/c were always accompanied by fighter escorts, usually 109s or 190s. They were very precious and very vulnerable. Most likely flew in flights of very small numbers, such as 1, 2 or 3. Used for high priority cargo or for heavy, urgently needed cargo. Junkers were used for most stuff. These were pigs with wings that flew like bricks.

@sjcnospam

Unfortunately the assigned fighter escorts weren't always available or simply lacked adequate numbers and so
the loss rate amongst the gigants was comparatively high. The huge gigants
were spotted over great distances in the sky or on the ground. They oftenly were bombing or strafing targets. In late august 1944 TG5 was disbanded due to losses. See H.-P. Dabrowski's excellent documentation 'The Luftwaffe giants in WWII'.

They're German planes, but they're in the Romanian air force. They have German planes because Romania was allied with the Axis at first, but when they were invaded by the Soviet Union they were ordered to attack German Forces, then they were allied with the VVS. Some Romanians still fought in Luftwaffe Units as volunteers.

@Jake

The Rumanians switched to the allies on august 23rd 1944. The german troops were given a two days ultimatum to leave the country. Afterwards the rumanian army fought until the end of war side by side with the russians. In 1944 the rumanians still had a lot of german equipment and a/c. They just painted their prewar roundel over the fascist cross and the yellow markings (wingtips and bands) were overpainted with white.

BTW the Me323 was faster than the Ju52, even when fully loaded. It consisted mainly of a aluminium and wood skeleton covered with canvas. Inspite of some disadvantages (i. e. lack of defensive armament, bad manoeuvrable) too it was the most effective transport aircraft of WWII.

THX for compliments
Armin

I have always considered that making quality skins for large planes was more difficult than for small planes. Indeed, even the plane is four, five or six times larger than a fighter (like Spitfire or Bf109), the skin file still has the same resolution. Thus it is much more difficult to produce realistic weathering or paint chipping.
And you did it perfectly for those Gigant.
Congratulations !

PS : it's a real shame to destroy such nice skins !
