I want to make my first skins, have installed GIMP 2.8 now but find it rather difficult since it has so many functions. If it is not too much asked can someone pls explain to me "how to" so that at least I can start painting? I know how to import the void file and switching to RGB mode but when it comes to this "Alpha-Channel" thingie I don't get it . That would be really grand cos I wanna try to make skins for a new plane we all like a lot (I guess) Thx in advance.

I've dipped my toe into skinning and did not feel successful. If you start with a template, I think you have more control because they tend to use layers. You can copy a layer and manipulate the layer to your hearts content, and then deactivate the layer from which you copied. I can not help you beyond that, but I'm sure someone will step up to help (you and me).

Honestly, it would be best to use templates. Go to Simmers Paint Shop. They have several different templates available for you to download and start skinning.

As for the void stuff, I used to know how to do it, but without GIMP in front of me I cannot remember. Sorry for that.

Anyway, just give templates a shot! Smile

With all due respect to Simmers Paint Shop and Jesters-templates, I on the other hand encourage you to go on with your own templates. Here are some links to Gimp-tutorials for beginners. I'm sure you will find your way by following them.

Hope these will help. Google is a very effective search engine, typing something like gimp-tutorials will reveal a host of options. Have fun Smile

Thx for the answers. It seems to be not easy at all - yes so I could alternatively be naughty and simply request experienced skinners to please make two skins for the He-177 which was my intention - I have skins in mind I have seen on bing-search: lightblue underneath and patterned with green stripes on lightsandbrown basic the whole plane and I have seen a totally dark version (original photograph) which looked awesome too... OK the void is the template !!! a template is a guide or pattern
in gimp open the void
where it says image select mode then RGB
then go to layer select transparency
from that drop down select color to alpha
a box will appear with the preview which the little bar at the bottom will be white
click ok
now everything white on the void skin is an alpha transparent
ok so far now go to layer
select new layer
select white click ok
you now have a white picture
in the tool box
which you should have open you will see the the layers
one will say back ground one will say new layer
use the green arrow at the bottom of the layer box to switch the back ground to the top of the layer stack

you now have a template you can paint
each layer you add
goes
new layer
select transparency
ok
then switch up so the new layer is on top of the stack then add your paint to it and so on
when finished right click any where in the layer part of your tool box and select merge visible layers from the menu which pops up

click ok when the merge box pops up

and last part go back to image select indexed from the drop down box
in that box select optimum color palette 256 colors click ok
save as bmp ignore alpha ok

hope this helps a little sounds complex but its not Smile

Thanks Krinpit. That is a good jump start. I am going to give this another try.
