I've read the instructions on all of the forums, but they all assume a level of knowledge I don't have. I've heard of .ini's, STD's, skins, etc. and couldn't define, find, or modify one to save my life.
So, I'm wondering if there is anyone in the Houston area that wants to serve as a mentor. The closer to League City, the better, but I'll take anything I can get.

Well, I am from a land far far away...
But I can help
.ini is your 'configuration file'. It is confusing, because the name isn't 'config.ini'. It's just 'config'. I think in some version, maybe the original Il2, that it had ".ini" in its name but that's a vague memory
STDs. Bad news. See a doctor and get rid of it
Skins. These are the bitmap (.bmp) files the sim uses to wrap a cover or "skin" around the 3D models. Aircraft skins must be in 256 color at a 1 MB size file, maximum, or they will not display in-game. If the skin you've chosen fails to display, the default skin should show instead. Each skin must go into precisely the correct aircraft folder. To locate the folders, go into your Il2 install directory and open "paint schemes" and then "skins". You will now be seeing a folder for each individual plane model.

Your memory serves you well Chris and it still is config.ini. I'll bet you are using Windows 7 and have not changed the system default of 'don't show known extensions'. When I first started using Win7 I was surprised to find that .mis and .properties extensions did not show in the Missions folder and the .bmp extension did not show in the Skins folder.
You can change it in Control Panel/Appearance and Personalization/Folder Options/View.

chris blair.
When typing "STD" in my email, my thoughts went the same direction as yours.

Even though you may not be showing known extension Chris & Beebop, IL-2 1946 has it named conf.ini and not config.ini.
Conf.ini Guide: www.mission4today.com/...&cat=7
I even looked in my IL-2 folder before I posted too.
IMO, changing your folders to show known extension is a very good idea.

Could we get back to the original problem? We are in danger of going off on tangents.
