I have read through the entire threat and i can't believe that nobody has mentioned:

Die Brücke (English: The Bridge)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...cke_(film)

This is in my opinion one of the best war films even though there are no big battles but just an unimportant skirmish over a bridge of no strategic importance. No other film that I have seen has captured the pointlessness of war in such a clear way.

LOL, that does sound pretty good. It sounds better than the movie "Rubber" where a car tire has physic powers that can blow peopless heads up. O_o I never saw it, and I never will see it. What was that one movie where this guy leads all these Jewish people who escaped Warsaw or something against the Nazis. It ends with them grenading a tank or something. What's it called? It was a pretty good one too. Another good one was where there was this POW and he was the camp "lawyer", and they tried to escape. What was that one called?

Just watched Stalingrad.

I'm across it historically from reading Beevor, and he also goes into the tragedy of it, beyond mere statistics.

The film also covers that extensively outside of the usual dramatic licence.
Obviously, German not being my first language means I have probably missed a fair bit in translation, but it is a good story imo.

I'm with others - my favourites include Band of Brothers, Battle of Britain, Gen. Kill, Hurt Locker, Apocalypse Now, Memphis Belle, Defiance, Catch 22, Black Hawk Down, Sav. Priv. Ryan, Letters from Iwo Jima, Glory, Kokoda etc etc.

LOL, Defiance. I think that is it! I can think back several years ago when I watched it on Comcast at my Aunt's house. ^^ Good times!

There are a lot of war movies out there depicting a lot of different wars. The best? I'm afraid I can't answer that question. A few war movies which have made lasting impressions:

Come and see
Ran
Das boot
Paths of glory
Letters from Iwo Jima
Joyeux Nöel
Zwartboek
Catch 22
Master and commander

I also liked:
Indigénes
Gallipoli

... and most probably there are others that just doesn't come to mind right now.

1. Band of Brothers (if you count it as a film)
2. The Longest Day
3. Das Boot (directors cut)

Also forgot:

A Bridge Too Far, Master and Commander (thanks Vole) and the most recent movie, "War Horse", was very good, IMO.

I completely forgot "The funniest joke in the world"! THAT one also made a lasting impression. If you don't know why joke warfare was banned see this:

This reminds me that Monty Python and the Holy Grail would qualify as a war movie. Laughing
