Royal Romanian AF IAR-81C Nr.343 Vasile Mirila, G2v late 1944

IAR 81C 'White 343' of Adjutant sef aviator (Flight Sergeant) Vasile Mirila, Grupul 2 vânatoare, 14 September 1944

Mirila flew this aircraft on a low-level strafing raid on the main Axis air base of Szamosfalva (Someseni), near Kolozsvar (Cluj) on 14 September 1944. Following a single pass over the heavily-defended airfield, he returned to base and reported having set 'large Gotha glider' (probably a Luftwaffe Go 242) on fire. Mirila had already destroyed an I-16 and an unidentified Soviet reconnaissance aircraft on 27 June 1944, and the 'Gotha' would be his fourth, and last, victory. Note the the pre-war red-yellow-blue cockades which replace the pro-Axis Michael's cross national markings. The white fuselage band and wing tips were Allied identification symbols.
